Unique, colorful, and creative are just a few words used to describe Wendell’s work. Her extraordinary use of texture and color are constants in each of her pieces. She plays with oil, acrylic and watercolor paints, dyes, inks, colored pencils, and crayons often adding flora, feathers, wax, wood or other sources to create her unique textured style in her paintings and sculptures.
Wendell began her art career as a graphic illustrator in the Army in 1978. Shortly thereafter, she became a photojournalist and went on to work in public affairs, training and operations, education and professional development. She retired as a Command Sergeant Major from the Rhode Island Army National Guard after 28.5 years and finished an 18-year career at Boston University in Employment and Training. Wendell with her husband, Tom McLaughlin relocated to Bradenton, Florida where she creates her art and also volunteers as a Guardian ad Litem with Manatee County's 12th Circuit Court and also volunteers as an "Adult Buddy" with the Early Learning Coalition Literacy Buddy Program in Sarasota County.
She believes in helping others through volunteer work and "painting/passing it forward" to those in need whether it be by assisting in community service, donating her time, or through some daily act of kindness. Wendell carries this passion over into her artwork by donating a portion of her art sales and/or monetary awards to various charities.*
